Gandikota is a small village located on the banks of the Penna River, about 15 km from Jammalamadugu, in Kadapa District, Andhra Pradesh.

Gandikota Fort was constructed in the 11th century by the Kakatiya King from Bommanapalle Village, a subordinate of Ahavamalla Someswara, the Kalyani Chalukya ruler. Initially built with mud, the fort later evolved into a robust architectural masterpiece.

The iron gates of the fort served as a defense mechanism against invading armies. Legends say the gates were designed with iron spikes to prevent elephants from breaking through during battles.
